SOLD This painting of the handsome Leo was painted as a commission for a birthday gift.
In spite of the dozens of pet portraits I have completed over the past couple years, I have never painted my own dog Wylan. I think this is due to fear that I won't be able to capture his likeness and his spirit. However - as you will soon find out, I plan to take the leap and attempt a couple of artworks featuring Mr. Wylan! This me luck. Till tomorrow, Kathy

This cute little calf was born at Argyll Farms - which is my family's farm.
Growing up, I always loved the calves. I also loved the multitude of kittens that were born over the years. Early on, I discovered I had a real knack for procrastinating from doing barn chores in order to play with the calves and kittens! My sister and I each had a similar amount of barn chores, but interestingly, it usually took me twice as long to get my work done! Today's little painting was a work I completed on location during my vacation back in July. The painting depicts Lake Huron at Grand Bend beach.
I treated myself to some quality alone time the day I painted this piece. After a short road trip to Grand Bend, I walked around taking photos (for painting reference), did a painting on the beach, took myself out for a sushi lunch, and finished it off by visiting a couple of art galleries! My kind of perfect day. Till tomorrow, Kathy SOLD For those of you who don't know - I was born & raised on a diary farm. Today's painting was inspired by a photo I recently took at my family's farm. During this challenge, I plan to share a few stories from my years growing up on the farm. My first fun farm fact is that I used to be in a 4H calf club. As part of of the calf club, I got to train my own calf and then enter it in a show at the Stratford fair. My brother Rob was in the club with me - and thank goodness he was! He always helped me clip my calf's hair and style it's top line (the top line is the hair on the calfs back, right above the spine). While I really enjoyed 4H, I was not winning any competitions! I was more interested in cuddling and spoiling my calf rather than training her to walk nicely with a halter! On a side note, for those of you who aren't familiar with 4H, it includes a variety of clubs and activities based on a “Learn To Do By Doing” philosophy. The four H’s stand for head, heart, hands and health (check out more at 4-H Ontario). Till Tomorrow, Kathy Photo credit to Robert Taylor, photo available under the creative commons licence
Welcome to my latest 30-day painting challenge! You are in for a month of surprises! With my theme being "a little of this, a little of that", I will be sharing works produced with various mediums (e.g. oils, acrylic, charcoal) & depicting various subjects. Todays painting was inspired by a photo I took on vacation in Colorado last June (at the Stephen Quiller workshop). Each morning at about 6am, we ventured into the mountains with our hiking guide to take in some of the wonderful scenery! I found the temperature in the mountains interesting - cool in the night and early morning (while you can't see it here - we wore mittens), then quite hot in the day time. |
